Frequently Asked Questions......Answered!

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a heightened state of subconscious awareness, usually characterised by deep relaxation (trance).

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the name given to the therapy that takes place while in hypnosis. Suggestions are planted in the subconscious mind in order to bring about beneficial change.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, in fact most people experience hypnosis on a daily basis. Daydreaming is a form of hypnosis. The state of entering and awakening from sleep is hypnosis, as is the feeling of been lost in a book or a film or the mind wandering while driving a car.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness during which the mind is acutely focused whilst the body experiences a state of deep and pleasant relaxation.

Can I be made do something against my will?

No definitely not. Anything suggested to you that would be contrary to your ethics, morals or religious beliefs would be immediately rejected by the subconscious mind and you would break the trance.

Am I giving up control during hypnosis?

No, you are totally in control during the session. At any stage you could open your eyes, get up and leave the room. But your experience is more likely to be one of deep relaxation.

Can only weak-minded people be hypnotised?

On the contrary, while everybody can be hypnotised those who respond better are people with strong, active minds, capable of imagination and mental dexterity.

The mind works primarily on two levels, namely the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the thinking mind. It analyses and rationalises, making decisions about everyday things. The subconscious mind runs all of your unconscious programming. It processes 100,000 pieces of information per second. 85% of our mental abilities are subconscious. The subconscious governs all of our behaviour and is the seat of our emotions.
If a habit or a pattern of behaviour is to be changed, such as smoking, overeating, phobias, etc. it must be done at a subconscious level.

During hypnosis there exists a window of opportunity for this change or modification to take place. Hypnotherapy has a high success rate because once the subconscious patterns are changed the client no longer seeks gratification or satisfaction from the former habit.
